Worst. Daddy. EVER!!!
Had to rush The Man Cub to the ER today with a whopping big gash on his forehead. And of course it happened on my watch.
And I was looking right at him as he happily maneuvered his
Baby Walker into a big pile of wooden railroad tracks and tipped over at a 90-degree angle, conking his noggin a good one on the way down on the corner of the TV.
I flew off the couch and swooped him up, screaming (him, not me), into my arms and whisked him back to the bedroom for some serious comforting. I didn’t see the blood till we hit the bed, and by then it was all over the sheets and running down the right side of his face in a crimson crescent.
I will never forget the sight as long as I live.
The rest is a blur. The Missus was working and unavailable, so I had to load the boy up and race him to the hospital myself. I tell you what, when you run into an ER with a howling child with blood running down his face, people will part for you like Moses and the Red Sea. In the end, we were in and out of there quicker than the usual wait just to be triaged.
So they Crazy-Glued his head back together and today my son earned his first scar, non-emotional variety. He doesn’t seem any worse for the wear – it was old news for him already by the time we got home – but it’s gonna take me a while to live down, and I will never forget the twin sights of my boy taking a header juuust out of my reach, and my initial glom of the unexpected blood rolling down his otherwise perfect cheek.
Thus, I end as I begin. Fang Bastardson – Worst Daddy Ever. I’ll stick to Pet Rocks and pet peeves after this.

I can top that.
Em broke her arm. We didn't know it.
She broke it at 10am - we didn't take
her to ER till 1pm. Nice, huh! Its worse, she
had such a bad break, she needed surgery.
(they didn't detect that detail at the ER - she
had to wait 3 days for a doc to look again and
determine how bad it was) She is a saint, and
can you imagine the pain she was in for 4 days!
You can bet the second (yes - I said second) time
she broke the same elbow (yes - I said same elbow) we rushed her to the hospital IMMEDIATELY. Yes, she had to have surgery again. So - you are not the worst dad...I believe we may win that parenting award. Gotta go make ammends...kiss her head and cherish her.. Bye from Kath in ME!!!

Is this the place to share stories of ER terrors? My cat scratched Juliette's face about a 1/4 inch from her eye; no stitches, small scar, reconsider wisdom of cats + kids. She fell down 14 stairs right in front of me; no injuries, mommy loses 10 years of life. She fell off a couch backwards and cut her head on a metal return air grate; two stitches, first trip to ER. But Ilsa's was the best. How better to improve a day spent in a mechanic's shop getting new tires after a flat than to follow it with a trip to the ER - only after going to the WRONG hospital first? Full story. Photo.
Sucks that they've all happened on my watch, but I console myself that it's because, well, how often are they entirely on someone else's watch??? Not long enough to get into trouble, obviously. Sorry you had a shitty time of it. Take heart in the fact that they have mutant healing factors at this age and very short memories. You won't even forget it, but they will.
