Thank you, Pete Seeger

For steadfastly doing your part to ensure that this land has remained our land through the decades, encompassing McCarthyism, Viet Nam, Watergate, all eight hellish years of the Bush Administration and every other threat to freedom and civil rights that came between.

Some bright day, may hundreds of thousands of people of all races, religions and creeds come together to celebrate America and everything that’s good and decent about her in the shadow of a monument to you.

Let freedom ring!

Seeger also restored some of commie Woody's original lyrics to the song. Instead of the bowdlerized version, we got these verses:

"In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,/By the relief office I seen my people;/As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking/Is this land made for you and me?

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;/Sign was painted, it said private property;/But on the back side it didn't say nothing;/That side was made for you and me.

Nobody living can ever stop me,/As I go walking that freedom highway;/Nobody living can ever make me turn back/This land was made for you and me."

All in all, a very inspired concert by all involved -- even Sheryl Crow. And did you hear Jon Bon Jovi sing Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" with Bettye Lavette? Holy shit! New found respect for the Jersey boy.

I'll have to go back to the TiVo and check out Mr. Jovi's performance. I will admit to fast-forwarding through it after we got home from The Last Boy Scout's daughter's birthday party.

Thanks for the tip!

You forgot Jim Crow, but after eight years of having the Constitution ran through a paper shredder, it's easy to overlook a few.

This is truly a day to celebrate; the final 24 hous of what was arguably the most hideous eight-year presidential term in our nation's history.

The NY Times had a story today about the Army's increase in enlistments due to the economic downturn. You don't suppose ...

BTW, the Boss is providing the halftime mini-concert at this year's Super Bowl. Don't know the song selection yet, but I'll be monitoring to see who wins that battle, Springsteen or the NFL.

The NFL wants three hits that their corporate stooges might recognize, and they better not be that 'pinko crap' from the Woody Guthrie CD. Should be good theater.

In the meantime, rock on. There's a Sam Cooke song that sums all of this up nicely.
